The life of a Systems employee...
Systems Technicians at the Northern Star get the greatest technology experience out of any campus job. ResTech and ITS can't even compete!
The Systems Department is completely student run... no red tape will stop you from implementing anything! Well, almost... :)
We currently have 4 Linux, a Solaris, an Apple Xserve (sweet!), and 2 Windows servers a Windows server. There is never ending opportunity to play with every major operating system!
What kind of stuff do we do here? Here's a brief list:
- HTTP/HTTPS web site hosting using Apache 2 (Santino).
- MySQL database administration (Santino/Junior).
NT4 domain controller (NSFILE1) Replaced by a Samba primary domain controller (Junior).
- Automated internal Microsoft Software Update Services (NSFILE2) -- keeps our Windows machines patched up automatically!
- File serving on our 218GB RAID5 file server (Junior) via Samba, AppleTalk, and NFS.
- Postfix MTA/Courier POP3/IMAP (Apu). We host email for the Northern Star domains (star.niu.edu, northernstar.info, nsradio.com).
- DNS hosting using
djbdns PowerDNS (Santino/Junior).
- Internet radio hosting for NS*Radio using Icecast2 (Santino).
- Directory services using OpenLDAP (Junior). We use RFC 2307 as our main LDAP schema.
- Windows/Macintosh workstation administration and maintenance. We also maintain our department's Linux workstations.
- K4 Publishing System administration and hacking.
- Web programming using PHP/MySQL.
- And of course, we are the support staff for all of the Northern Star employees.
